Like most inhalers Ventolin has converted its propellent to HFA. Many users find HFA inhalers considerably less effective than the old CFC versions. There are a few techniques that might help improve effectiveness:

• Be sure the inhaler is primed.
• Inhale each puff slowly.
• Hold each puff in for at least 10 seconds.
• Wait 30 to 60 seconds before taking a second puff.
• Try using a spacer.

If these methods fail to improve effectiveness, it is worth looking into nebulized albuterol or epinephrine. While not as convenient, many people find nebulized versions work better and faster.

Warnings & Side Effects

The majority of patients who use Ventolin experience only mild side effects, including:

• Restlessness
• Tremor
• Headache
• Mild nausea
• Dizziness
• Sore throat
• Runny nose
• Heartburn

The above side effects are only cause for concern if severe. Rarely Ventolin can cause more serious adverse effects which should be brought to the attention of a doctor:

• Rapid heart rate
• Increased blood pressure
• Low potassium levels
• Chest pain

Another rare, but serious, side effect is paradoxical bronchospasm, in which bronchospasm symptoms worsen immediately after using Ventolin. This typically happens with the first use of a new inhaler and calls for emergency medical attention.
